Ebook About A stand alone edition of Annie Proulx’s beloved story “Brokeback Mountain” (in the collection Close Range)—the basis for the major motion picture directed by Ang Lee, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.Annie Proulx has written some of the most original and brilliant short stories in contemporary literature, and for many readers and reviewers, “Brokeback Mountain” is her masterpiece. Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands, come together when they’re working as sheepherder and camp tender one summer on a range above the tree line. At first, sharing an isolated tent, the attraction is casual, inevitable, but something deeper catches them that summer. Both men work hard, marry, and have kids because that’s what cowboys do. But over the course of many years and frequent separations this relationship becomes the most important thing in their lives, and they do anything they can to preserve it. The New Yorker won the National Magazine Award for Fiction for its publication of “Brokeback Mountain,” and the story was included in Prize Stories 1998: The O. Henry Awards. In gorgeous and haunting prose, Proulx limns the difficult, dangerous affair between two cowboys that survives everything but the world’s violent intolerance.Book Brokeback Mountain: Now a Major Motion Picture Review :
Overall AssesmentI feel nauseous. Or, to quote some dude talking about Johnny Cash's Hurt, 'It took my breath away, and not in a good way.'They were all well-written, and she knows how to work suspense enough to keep you reading. Her characters spring into full-fleshed, believable life with astonishing rapidity. Her style, with its multitude of truths by omission, and subtle details that unveil deep vistas if you push at them hard enough, is the kind that 'rewards close reading', even if metaphors are occasionally overwrought or indecipherable. But only occasionally did the stories engage me on an emotional level, and then not in a good way.In terms of Cultural Learnings Of America this collection did a good job of rendering Americans, who are so familiar (over-familiar) to peoples all around the world, being the most (self-)depicted people on earth, once more alien and rather unlikeable. Though I think this is more a product of the writing than anything. Literary fiction of this kind, being the opposite of commercial fiction, actively works not to endear the characters it depicts to you, to give you as few points of identification and sympathy as possible. I suppose this is so one's attention is kept focussed on the prose? It also has the pleasant effect of reinforcing (or reviving, if necessary) one's own parochialism and making one glad one is what one is and not one of *them*. Identity reinforcement, is what it is, for we can only know what we are by measuring ourselves against what we are not, and it is no unhealthy thing to do every so often. I felt suddenly very glad to be a run-of-the-mill middle-class, cultural Christian, city-bred, city-bound New Zealander at the end of this, though undoubtedly someone could write stories about them that did the same thing. That's just how litfic works. Was gunna give it two stars, but re-reading I was struck by just how good her prose is. You've got to take your time to appreciate it. It's not exactly my cup of tea, but there are some genuinely beautiful, if opaque, lines. And these characters, and stories, did stay in my head. I don't like having them there, but they're there. I think they will be for a while. Very little book. I was surprised when I received it! High priced for the lack of content.
