Ebook About "Patrick Gale has written a book which manages to be both tender and epic, and carries the unmistakable tang of a true story. I loved it." -- Jojo Moyes A privileged elder son, and stammeringly shy, Harry Cane has followed convention at every step. Even the beginnings of an illicit, dangerous affair do little to shake the foundations of his muted existence - until the shock of discovery and the threat of arrest cost him everything. Forced to abandon his wife and child, Harry signs up for emigration to the newly colonised Canadian prairies. Remote and unforgiving, his allotted homestead in a place called Winter is a world away from the golden suburbs of turn-of-the-century Edwardian England. And yet it is here, isolated in a seemingly harsh landscape, under the threat of war, madness and an evil man of undeniable magnetism that the fight for survival will reveal in Harry an inner strength and capacity for love beyond anything he has ever known before. In this exquisite journey of self-discovery, loosely based on a real life family mystery, Patrick Gale has created an epic, intimate human drama, both brutal and breathtaking. This is a novel of secrets, sexuality and, ultimately, of great love.Book A Place Called Winter Review :
Holy Cow! This novel is filled with so much angst and sorrow and sadness and struggle, I am amazed I got through it---AND what an ending! Set in the early 1900's England and ending in Winter, Canada it is one helluva read. Though the entire story is built around closeted Harry Cane's hope to find that all elusive love-of-his-life, boy does he suffer all the way there. My one criticism is author Gale literally leaps from past to present with alarming speed, many times I had to re-read sections to understand what time I was in. I see this is going to become a series. Hats off to him!!!! And yes, I will read more of this author and so should YOU! I had waited for the launch of this book with great anticipation, but it did not live up to my expectations.I found the first few pages intriguing. However the story then reverts from the present to the past life of Harry Cane, and the first half of the book did not hold my attention. I found the character of Harry Cane a little too indolent and spineless, and failed to understand why, after a childhood at a British boy's boarding school, he did not realize his homosexual tendencies. His marriage was obviously one of convenience for both parties. So sad that homosexuals felt it necessary to marry in order to meet conventions at that time.Although the story gains momentum in the second half when Cane journeys to Canada, some of the other characters are one-dimensional, especially that of Troels Munck who reminded me of the evil villain in a Victorian melodrama. Munck appears intermittently throughout the novel as if he just "pops in" at Moose Jaw or Winter. Given the immense distances from England to the Canadian prairies, and the time the journey took in those days, I found his conveniently timed appearances a little difficult to believe.I enjoyed the beautiful sketches of the prairie landscape and the family scenes at Moose Jaw, which I found totally credible. But the scene with Ursula near the end just did not work for me, and the leaps from the Bethel rehabilitation centre back to the past disrupted the flow of the story.Wonderful prose, evocative descriptions, but the story just did not engage me emotionally.
